Wrexham County Borough Museum & Archives

Wrexham, in the heart of North-East Wales, is a city with deep historical roots and a strong cultural identity. Founded before the 11th century, it grew into a key centre for trade and administration in the Middle Ages. Over time, Wrexham became known for coal mining, leather production, and the brick and terracotta industries. In 1882, it made brewing history when Wrexham Lager became the first UK brewery to produce lager beer, a tradition that continues today.

Embracing the future

Wrexham embraces the future while honouring its past. In partnership with Bruynzeel Storage Systems, the city has reimagined how its heritage is preserved and shared. This collaboration reflects Wrexham’s commitment to innovation, sustainability, and cultural engagement through Bruynzeel’s expertise in smart, space-efficient storage.

Wrexham

From Military Barracks to Cultural Beacon

What was once the Royal Denbighshire Militia barracks, and later Wrexham’s police station, now houses the Wrexham County Borough Museum. Managed by the Wrexham Heritage & Archives Service, the museum features two galleries that explore the history of the city and its surrounding communities. It also holds the Royal Welch Fusiliers archive and oversees several important heritage sites, including Bersham Colliery Headgear, Holt Castle, and Minera Lead Mines.

A Collection That Tells Wrexham’s Story

Since 1982, the museum has collected objects reflecting the lives and stories of Wrexham’s people. The collection now includes over 16,000 items, covering archaeology, art, textiles, natural history, and military heritage. Highlights include the Royal Welch Fusiliers collection, the Welsh Football Archive.

The Wrexham Museum and Bruynzeel Storage Systems partnership is a perfect example of what can happen when shared values come together. Wrexham is committed to making its heritage accessible and engaging, while Bruynzeel brings the technical expertise to support that mission in a sustainable and space-efficient way. The result is a collections centre that’s not only practical but also inspiring. It sets a new standard for museum storage and education in Wales and meets the requirements of BS4971:2017 and EN15095. The collection also holds a large assortment of bricks, tiles, and terracotta. These are stored in custom-designed systems using Sysco® shelving, Longspan racking, and pigeon slot shelving for smaller framed artworks.

“With Bruynzeel’s help, our collection is now accessible to the peoplewe collect for — the
people of Wrexham.” - Karen Murdoch - Interim Museum Manager

Smart Storage Meets Sustainable Design

In partnership with Bruynzeel Storage Systems, the museum transformed a previously unused building into a modern collections centre. At the heart of the facility is Bruynzeel’s Double Decker shelving system, which fully utilizes the building’s height. The system is electronically controlled, includes multiple safety features, and features a glazed balustrade that lets visitors view the collections from both levels. To maximise space, walls are fitted with Sysco® Display shelving and sliding glass doors, while ArteStore mesh panels hold larger framed artworks and signage. These elements turn the walls into display areas visible throughout the building. All shelving is made using Bruynzeel GreenSteel, which significantly reduces carbon emissions compared to traditional steel.

Before and After

The transformation is completed. Together, we created a unique and efficient open collection store. A shared achievement that benefits the Wrexham community.
