Cleveland Museum of Natural History
The transformation of the Cleveland Museum of Natural History
went far beyond new public galleries. As part of a major renovation
and expansion, the museum developed a new belowground
storage facility to protect and preserve millions of specimens.
A Facility Designed for Growth
The new storage facility houses extensive biological, geological and anthropological collections. Developed as part of a broader institutional transformation, the project was designed to meet long-term preservation needs while improving accessibility and organization.
A Collaborative Design Process
Delta Designs, partnered with the museum from the earliest stages of the project. The storage systems were designed around the specific needs of the collections, ensuring an optimal balance between protection, accessibility and efficient use of space.
We now have state-of-the-art collection storage below ground, which will mean that this museum continues on for many generations beyond me.

Integrated Storage Solutions
The delivered solution includes:
- Approximately 500 museum cabinets in various sizes, including oversized sealed cabinets with bifold doors for large biological specimens
- 9 Compactus® XTR high-density mobile shelving systems
- Wall-mounted ArteStore systems
The storage environment is divided into five dedicated rooms, including dry and cold storage areas, each tailored to specific collection requirements.
Improved Protection and Control
The new facility provides enhanced protection against pests,
moisture and environmental fluctuations, while maximizing available
space for the collection.
